A New Home for Ancient Treasures
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is set to become one of the largest and most significant archaeological museums in the world when it opens its doors in 2025. Located just 2 kilometers from the iconic Giza Pyramids, this magnificent institution will house over 100,000 artifacts from ancient Egypt, including the complete collection of Tutankhamun's treasures.
Designed to showcase Egypt's rich heritage through state-of-the-art conservation and exhibition facilities, the museum spans nearly 500,000 square meters and represents the culmination of decades of planning and development.
The Grand Egyptian Museum project was first conceived in 1992, but construction didn't begin until 2005. After years of careful development and meticulous planning, the museum is now ready to take its place as one of the world's premier cultural institutions.
The architectural design, selected through an international competition, features a translucent stone wall at the entrance and incorporates numerous references to Egyptian history and geometry. The main entrance is aligned with the Great Pyramid of Khufu, creating a direct visual connection between the ancient and modern worlds.
One of the museum's most impressive features is the grand staircase, which displays 87 colossal statues and artifacts chronologically arranged to showcase Egypt's incredible journey through time. At the top of the staircase, visitors will be greeted by the iconic statue of King Ramses II.
The museum will also house the first complete collection of Tutankhamun's treasures, with over 5,000 artifacts on display together for the first time since their discovery in 1922. The collection includes the famous gold mask, sarcophagus, and numerous items that accompanied the young pharaoh to the afterlife.
Beyond its role as a display space, the Grand Egyptian Museum will also serve as a global center for Egyptology, featuring advanced research facilities, conservation laboratories, and a children's museum to inspire the next generation of archaeologists and historians.
